St. Jacob Baradeus Monastery in Atchaneh
and Beth Suryoye – Mor Gabriel in Ajaltoun, Lebanon
26-30 August 2013

“Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace” (Nehemiah 2: 17)

In response to the invitation of His Holiness the Patriarch and under His patronage and presence, the first founding Syriac monks convention took place in St. Jacob Baradeus Monastery in Atchaneh and Beth Suryoye – Mor Gabriel in Ajaltoun, Lebanon from 26 to 30 August 2013.

The convention took the verse “Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace” (Nehemiah 2: 17) as its motto. The Episcopal committee appointed by His Holiness, namely Their Eminences Mor Gregorius Saliba Shemoun - Patriarchal Counselor - and Mor Theophilus George Saliba - Archbishop of Mount Lebanon and Tripoli and Secretary of the Holy Synod - attended and participated in the convention along with around 30 monks.

On Tuesday 27 August 2013, the convention started in St. Jacob Baradeus Monastery in Atchaneh with a spiritual retreat whereby His Holiness opened with prayer and an inspirational spiritual speech about monkhood and repentance. It was followed by spiritual words from His Eminence Mor Gregorius Saliba Shemoun and Mor Chrysostomos Mikhael Shemoun along with Raban Youhanna Lahdo and Raban Antonios Lahdo about the vows of monkhood, integrity, and the role of calm, peace and self-examination in the life of a monk.

On the following Wednesday and Thursday, there were expositions and discussions of the experiences of monks in various fields according to the set program and themes. On Wednesday, the sessions were held in Beth Suryoye – Mor Gabriel in Ajaltoun about the experience of a novice, monastic life and laws, monks and serving parishes and finally communication between monks. On Thursday, the sessions were held in St. Jacob Baradeus Monastery in Atchaneh and they dealt with issues related to monks, higher theological studies and St. Aphrem Theological Seminary in Maarat Saydnaya and firm attachment to the monastic vows.

After exposing the topics and issues, the participants discussed many suggestions and thoughts in discussion groups whereby they came up with recommendations that they submitted in a written report to His Holiness the Patriarch.

The monks elected the members of the standing committee. They are: Dayroyo Afram Lahdo, Dayroyo Yacoub Babawi, Dayroyo Roger Youssf Akhrass, Dayroyo Joseph Bali and Dayroyo Augeen Khoury Nemat.

In the concluding session, His Holiness the Patriarch was present along with the Preparatory committee Mor Gregorius Saliba Shemoun - Patriarchal Counselor - and Mor Theophilus George Saliba - Archbishop of Mount Lebanon and Tripoli and Secretary of the Holy Synod. Also were present the bishops: Mor Justinus Boulos Safar - Patriarchal Vicar in Zahleh, Mor Clemis Daniel Kourieh - Archbishop of Beirut, Mor Chrysostomos Mikhael Shemoun - Patriarchal Vicar in Atchaneh and Mor Timotheus Matthew - Patriarchal Secretary for Indian Affairs. The preliminary date for the next meeting was set to be the last week of August 2014.

In appreciation and show of love, His Holiness decorated Raban Zakka Jalma and Raban Samuel Issa with the holy cross.

The convention was concluded with a short and encouraging word by Archbishop George Saliba followed by the blessing and guidance of His Holiness the Patriarch.
