Commissioned by His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, His Eminence Mor Dionysius Jean Kawak, Director of the Patriarchal Office in Damascus, answered the invitation of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicose of All Armenians, to attend an International Consultation on the Crisis in Syria and the challenges of the communities of faithful in the current events. The consultation took place in Etchmiadzin on 11 and 12 June, 2014.

First of all, Bishop Kawak conveyed the greetings of His Holiness Patriarch Aphrem II to His Holiness Catholicose Karekin II and his thanks for the congratulations on the occasion of his patriarchal installation. He then read the letter addressed by His Holiness to the participants in the consultation. He reminded all of the painful Armenian and Syriac Genocide that took place at the turn of the twentieth century. What the Syrians are suffering of today in Syria, especially the Christians, is greatly similar to those sufferings. In his letter, His Holiness highlighted the role of the churches to spread the culture of peace, justice and love among people and to rebuild human values and dignity.

His Holiness Catholicose Karekin II opened the consultation with a speech including a call for peace and rejection of injustice everywhere. Speeches were delivered also including those of the Armenian Prime Minister Mr. Hovik Abrahamian, General Secretary of WCC Rev. Dr. Olav Tveit, Representative of Pope Francis Cardinal MacCarrick and the MECC representative Mr. Elie Halabi.
The consultation included many sessions on the political developments in Syria and humanitarian perspectives, the presence and witness of the Christians in the Middle East in the context of the transformations in the Arab World, and the Armenian communities of the Middle East and Syria and their perspectives.

Bishop Kawak was the moderator of the second session which included reports on the situation of the Christians in Syria and the social, educational and humanitarian implications of the crisis.
