His Holiness Celebrates the Feast of St. Barsawmo in Al-Hafar
On August 17, 2014, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II arrived to Al-Hafar where he was welcomed at the entrance of the village. He then walked in a procession with the Syriac Scouts to St. Barsawmo Church where he celebrated the Holy Qurobo (Divine Liturgy) on the occasion of the Feast of St. Barsawmo in Al-Hafar. His Holiness was assisted in the Holy Qurobo by their Eminences Mor Selwanos Boutros Al-Nehmeh, Archbishop of Homs, Hama and Environs and Mor Dionysius Jean Kawak, Patriarch Office Director.

In his homily, His Holiness emphasized the importance to keep the faith strong in the difficult circumstances. He said that holding firm to our faith results from our love of our countries and our attachment to the land we live in. He also spoke of the life of St. Barsawmo the Hermit who chose to be with the people when he saw their faith threatened. St. Barsawmo lived for a while amongst the people encouraging them to remain steadfast in their faith and attached to their traditions and heritage.

After the Holy Qurobo, His Holiness and the accompanying delegation attended a ceremony by the church council in the Hall of the church in honor of launching the Syriac Scouts of Al-Hafar which were blessed by His Holiness. In the ceremony, Rev. Riyad Jarjour was also given an honorary shield for his humanitarian and philanthropic work in Al-Hafar. His Holiness then distributed honorary certificates for outstanding students.

After the ceremony, His Holiness inaugurated a Children’s park and laid the foundational stone for a memorial for the martyrs of Al-Hafar.
All were then invited to a banquet in honor of His Holiness.
