Patriarch Aphrem II Participates in the “In Defense of Christians” Summit in Washington
During the period between 9 and 11 September 2014, His Holiness was invited to participate in the “In Defense of Christians” Summit in Washington DC.

In the opening session, their Eminences Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan, Patriarchal Vicar of Western USA and Mor Teethose Yeldho, Archbishop of the Malankara Archdiocese of Northern America participated along with a large number of clergy and faithful.

His Holiness Patriarch Aphrem II gave a speech on Thursday September 11, 2014 in which he portrayed the current situation of Christians in the Middle East. He focused on the displacement of Christians in Mosul and the Nineveh Plains. He also highlighted the humanitarian crisis that is affecting Christians in Syria as well as the worrying situation in Lebanon.

His Holiness also portrayed the suffering that the Christians are enduring in the East and he requested all people of good will to work seriously to help Christians in what they need. He also demanded them to work on the immediate release of the abducted bishops Boulos Yaziji and Youhanna Ibrahim. His Holiness also called the international community to multiply their efforts in offering help to Christians as well as protection and humanitarian support to help them stay in their homeland.
