Archbishop Jean Kawak Delivers a Lecture at Konstanz University in Germany
On November 21-23, 2014, Nisibin Aramaic Studies Institute organized a conference on the Christian presence in the Middle East in collaboration with Konstanz University in Germany. His Eminence Archbishop Mor Dionysius Jean Kawak, the Patriarchal Assistant, participated in this conference as the representative of His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II. Their Eminences the Archbishops: Mor Philoxenus Mattias Nayis, Patriarchal Vicar in Germany and Mor Nicodemus Daoud Sharaf, Archbishop of Mosul and Environs, also attended the conference as well as His Beatitude Gregorius III Lahham, Greek Catholic Melkite Patriarch and Mor Odisho Oraham, Assyrian Bishop of Europe.

During his lecture, Archbishop Jean Kawak spoke first of the relations that connect Christians to their Muslim neighbors in the Middle East. He referred to the historical role that Christians have played in building the Arabic culture and civilization. He then spoke of the current situation in the region and pointed out that Christians are living many persecutions and sufferings in the countries of the Middle East, especially in Syria and Iraq. He described the recent events in Mosul and the villages of the Nineveh Plains. His Eminence emphasized that what we are witnessing is a new genocide and religious cleansing. He then gave some suggestions that aim at a better service of all needy people. He also offered some of the Church’s perspectives on the future of Christians in the Middle East. He stressed that the Christian presence in the East is a necessity to preserve the culture, civilization and values.

The conference was enriched with many activities and lectures about the ways to help the suffering Christians in Iraq and Syria.
